28 October

Another good day at the beach. The water was a bit on the cold side, but our nippers are used to worse. The wind played along and didn't bother us too much.

We started off with some running and some sprints. The nippers were challenged to see if they could beat Bryan in running lines. If they beat him, they got to sit out the next run. I think Bryan worked extra hard to make sure that the nippers had to keep running :-)
We did some board relays through the shore break. Dianne showed what it means to be a team by helping Nathan through the waves. She would drag him and his board through the waves and almost to where our bouy, Bryan was. Just shows, that our nippers can really be a team when it comes down to it.
The funniest moment was when Donovan and Aaron got caught comming back into the shore break. Imagine 2 young nippers, fighting it out to get to the beach first, they see a wave and paddle for it. Little do they realize that the wave is bigger than them and is going to dump the onto a sand bar... their eyes looked something like the pic on the top right of this post. I was hysterical by the time they got back in. It was really funny. (For the rest of us)

We gave all the kids a special chocolate treat and Caitlyn got the Nipper of October award. She swam the whole of Aaron's 400m pool swim alongside him, encouraging him all the way. She's never nasty to anyone, even when being bullied, and is always keen to help those who need it! Go girl, go!!!

Perfect Day

The beach was awesome. Very light wind, with some mist and flat, flat, flat surf.
Some of the nippers had to go to the pool to do their pool swims for their exam. The following all nippers all passed and now qualify to their next exam:
Nicholas, Janna, Dianne and Aaron.
We are so proud of all the nippers who had to do a swim. Dean and Caitlin were lucky as they remain in the same age-group this year and did not have to swim.
Then it was back to the beach for some board relays and run-swim-run's. The water was freezing. But that doesn't stop our nippers, they gave it horns! I think that Shaun, who is 7, gave all the older kids a big fright when he showed them how it was done. He was comming out ahead of the, and even catching them during board relays. What a champ!?!
Our "special needs" kids, as they like to refer to themselves, did not exactly work very hard. In fact, they found kicking sand tired them out so much that they could hardly keep up with the others. The "special needs" ring-leader, Dianne, really seems to have latched onto this "special needs" phrase. T-shirt slogan... hmmmm?

14 October

The beach played along better for our second session! yay!!!The nippers actually begged to stay at the beach due to the good water temperature and the improved conditions. We did our normal beach workout of running, sprinting, pushups, situps and some jumping jacks thrown in for good measure. We finished off with some board relays and board sprints. I must say that I, Lauren, have the easy job. I get to start the kids and give them instructions, while Bryan waits for them in the water. I am not complaining! ;-)We ended the session off with a pow-wow with Joe. Donovan, in his first session with us, said more than Joe at the end of the day due to the number of questions that he asked. Think back to the cute little kid who is always asking, "why?". Now Donovan is sort of like that, just his questions are longer and more frequent. At least it shows he is interested! Go Donovan!!!(wonder if he's like that at school?)

In The Beginning

The nipper season restarted on 7 October. We had 12 very excited nippers, unfortunately the beach didnt play along. The tide was high, the water was cold, the wind was pumping, and nippers and coaches weren't too happy with the conditions. So, it was off to the pool. Not really what nippers is about, but hey, it allows us to work on some swimming skills ;-)I think that the nippers were so excited to be back, that they forgot to pack their ears in their nipper bags. All in all, it wasn't a bad session, but not our best.
